DSI Group has always been at the forefront of protecting nature and always focuses on introducing environmentally conscious production practices and products.

We focus on sustainable business practices and contribute for the protection of the environment.

As another project, we have made use of DSI Group New Year compliments to carry our message to stress the importance of protecting mangrove ecosystems and creating awareness.

Further to the information contained in our Desk Calendar , Notebook and diary 2025 we wish to capture the attention of our stakeholders for the following facts presented by the United Nations Environment Program on the importance of mangroves.

Mangrove regeneration for a sustainable future

Mangrove forests capture massive amounts of carbon dioxide emissions and other greenhouse gases from the atmosphere, and then trap and store them in their carbon-rich flooded soils for decades, centuries, or even millennia. This is an important ecosystem service as we face climate change.

  • With an average tree grow life of 25 years, a hectare of mature mangrove forest absorbs 840 metric tonnes of CO2. This means that one mangrove tree removes 308kg (0.3 tonnes) of CO2 from the atmosphere over its growth life, which is 12.3kg per year.
  • Mangroves protect coastal communities from extreme weather events like storms and tsunamis, significantly reducing wave impact reducing wave heights between five and 35 per cent.
  • Of the over 1,500 species that depend on mangroves for their survival, 15 per cent are threatened with extinction.
  • The disappearance of mangroves would have dramatic consequences for fisheries in developing countries as support fisheries, crucial for the protein supply of 1.5 billion people, especially in developing countries.
  • Mangroves can naturally regenerate if protected and restored.
  • Mangrove Regeneration in Sri Lanka recognized as one of seven UN World Restoration Flagships.

The DSI Super Sport “Danumai Wasanaawai” is a well-known quiz contest for school children. Almost all schools in the country participate in this programme which runs throughout the year. The standards of this quiz contest are being closely monitored by the Ministry of Education in Sri Lanka. In addition to the participants, other students of these schools also take a special interest in taking part in this programme. The full programme is being telecast through a popular local TV channel.

At DSI Samson Group, we take our social responsibilities very seriously. Our commitment to the betterment of our society goes way beyond business. With this in mind, in 1992, we launched an impressive programme named “Sithuvili” Sri Lanka (“thoughts”), an all island art competition now rated as the most prestigious art competition in Sri Lanka.

This competition provides an opportunity to children from all parts of Sri Lanka – from privileged backgrounds to the under-privileged to express their thoughts, impressions, views and concepts through drawing and painting. To encourage wider participation, entries are accepted in any medium (pencil, colour pencil, crayon, water colours, charcoal etc.).

The winners are recognised at a grand awards ceremony and cultural pageant attended by eminent businessmen, intellectuals as well as prominent local artists. The best part of the awards presentation is the fact that it’s not only the winners that get rewarded, the schools of the winners are also rewarded with a cash prize to be utilised for school development projects.

Being a responsible corporate citizen in Sri Lanka, DSI Samson Group is quite keen in supporting local sports such as volleyball and basketball.
